YouTube Video – Tough Mudder Scotland 10km
Video is from the 10am wave on Sunday 3rd July and of the Tough Mudder Scotland 10km course.
The 10km (actually 11.5km) course (featured in the video) had two big hills with a total of almost 300 elevation. The 15km (16.5km)course took in three hills and a great mix between running and obstacles, whilst the 5km (6km) took one (very big) hill and quite obstacle dense. A very muddy course, I took most of the trail sections out of the video, but due to the amount of rain before hand the course was mashed up!

As you can see from the map, there has been a change in obstacle placement with obstacles grouped together in-between a longer trail run. Historically, obstacles were placed equally between running (say around 500m). The 10km course probably highlighted this more with quite a bit of trail running in the additional 5km section with only 2 additional obstacles. The Scottish route was beautiful and very interesting (hills, fields, forests etc) But for those new to running and it being their first “challenge”, the obstacles used to break up the running quite nicely, but this is not quite the case any longer.

Final Thoughts
A very classic Tough Mudder course and whilst most of the area remained the same, there was a little change up in the route, which actually I preferred to the historic route. All three routes had challenging elevation, whilst in my mind the best “bang for buck” was the 15km course. Great mix of trail and woodland, challenging up hills and some fun downhills. 5km was nicely obstacle dense and a good starting challenge for those new to Tough Mudder and obstacle courses, whilst actually the 10km was my least favourite course due to a lot of extra running and fewer obstacles.
Village was nicely tightly packed and pretty much set out as others, however I dont recall having a DJ or MC at the finish. London West had the DJ which kept a fantastic atmosphere, whilst the MC is always good for a laugh whilst watching the spectacle which is Electro Shock Therapy.
My one big gripe was the length of the course – 16.5km compared to the 15km standard. For most other Tough Mudders, this isn’t an issue – but when there is a competitive race – Infinity – the course must be as close to the 15km as possible and extra mile is a LONG WAY off and for those running for specific distances will have possibly been disappointed not getting the “official” mileage recognised. Tough Mudder need to sort this out for Infinity, ETM and WTM or other races where a specific mileage is recognised.
